44 years ago, Minnesota hosted the World Junior Championship for the first time

🎖️ Canada's First Gold

The 1982 tournament marked Canada's FIRST EVER World Junior Championship gold medal. They went undefeated in 5 games on Minnesota ice, launching a dynasty that would dominate the 1990s and 2000s.

🏟️ The Venues

Games were played across multiple Minnesota cities: Minneapolis, Bloomington, Duluth, and even Kenora, Ontario. The tournament helped establish Minnesota's reputation as a premier international hockey destination.

⭐ Future NHL Stars

The 1982 tournament featured players who would become NHL legends. Canada's roster included future pros, while the Soviet team showcased their development system's elite talents.

🔄 Coming Full Circle

2026 marks Minnesota's triumphant return as host—44 years later. This time, Team USA enters as back-to-back defending champions, looking to cement their legacy on home ice during the tournament's 50th anniversary.

📅 1982 → 2026: A 44-Year Wait

The greatest World Juniors roster ever assembled: Sidney Crosby, Patrice Bergeron, Ryan Getzlaf, Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Corey Perry, Dion Phaneuf, Shea Weber, Brent Seabrook, and Andrew Ladd. Canada destroyed opponents 36-6 in their first five games. All 10 of those players won Stanley Cups.
1987
⚔️ The Punch-Up in Piestany

🔮 Connor Bedard's Masterpiece
At 17, Bedard broke Canada's single-tournament scoring record (23 points) AND career scoring record, leading Canada to gold in Halifax. His overtime winner against Slovakia showcased why he'd be 2023's #1 NHL pick. A generational talent at his peak.
2025
🎯 14-Round Shootout
Czechia captain Eduard Šalé scored in the 14th round of a shootout to defeat Sweden 3-2 for bronze—the longest shootout in World Juniors history. Šalé had already missed three attempts but stayed composed to secure the medal.

🍁 Canada's Five-Peat
Canada won five consecutive gold medals from 1993-1997, cementing their dominance. The run included future NHL stars like Paul Kariya, Eric Lindros, Jason Arnott, and Jarome Iginla. No country has matched this streak since.
2010
🇺🇸 Jordan Eberle's Miracle
Down 3-0 to Russia with 5 minutes left in a do-or-die game, Canada mounted an impossible comeback. Jordan Eberle tied it with 5 seconds left in regulation, then scored in overtime. Canada went on to win silver—one of the greatest comebacks ever.
1978
👑 16-Year-Old Gretzky
Wayne Gretzky, just 16 years old, dominated the 1978 tournament with 8 goals and 17 points in 6 games for Canada. It was a preview of the greatest career in hockey history. Gretzky remains the youngest player to ever dominate World Juniors.
2012
🇸🇪 Sweden's Drought Ends
After 31 years without gold, Sweden defeated Russia 1-0 in the final. Filip Forsberg scored the only goal. The victory ended Sweden's longest gold medal drought and proved their development system was still elite.
2010
🇺🇸 Jordan Schroeder Points Record
Jordan Schroeder broke the USA career points record at the World Junior Championships in a quarterfinal game against Finland on January 2, 2010. During the 6-2 win over Finland, he recorded three assists, and his 26th career point surpassed the previous record of 25 points held by Jeremy Roenick. Schroeder finished his World Juniors career with a total of 27 points after scoring the second goal in the championship game against Canada.
